ASEC Event Re-cap

Canadian Natural once again had the pleasure of supporting the 6th Annual Alberta Student Energy Conference (ASEC) as a bronze sponsor. Students from across Canada got together to raise awareness of Western Canada’s energy sectors and focus on the theme of “CHALLENGE” – turning today’s challenges into tomorrow’s opportunities.

Case Competition
The 2015 event featured a new initiative, a Case Competition, where multidisciplinary teams of four competed in front of a panel of industry leaders while gaining a better understanding of challenges currently facing the Western Canadian energy industry.

Mini Recruitment Panels
During the morning portion of the event we had an informative discussion with student event attendees alongside representatives from Devon and the Canadian Well Logging Society. We were impressed with the questions asked by the students and enjoyed getting to share some industry insights and application tips with them.

Career Fair
After our two mini panels it was time for the career fair, as always we enjoyed interacting with students and providing details on what completing a co-op and internship is like at Canadian Natural. Although we have filled all of our positions for this summer we encouraged students to be proactive when looking for summer work and to start their job hunt as early as the fall.

In-Situ Oil Sands Presentation
Peter, a Reservoir Engineering Manager from our Thermal department, spoke to students about how engineers can take challenges in the industry and turn them into improved performance at the asset.

Peter’s presentation shared information with students about who Canadian Natural is, provided a brief background on in-situ oil sands and the various recovery methods currently used and highlighted several issues his team has encountered and what innovative methods they used to overcome any roadblocks to increase their production and add more value for the company.

ASEC is a great event for students looking to begin a career in the oil and gas industry, not only do they get to network and build connections  with great industry representatives but they also get excellent insights from all of the presenters on the different challenges facing the industry.

The logistics team did a wonderful job organizing the event and they ensured that the entire day ran smoothly from morning to night, thank you so much for having us as a sponsor again this year!
